Understanding Intelligent Tracking Prevention caps on client-set JavaScript cookies and configuring HTTP-only custom domain DNS cookies through sGTM to preserve 90-day attribution windows.

Executive Technical SummaryApple's Safari Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) caps client-side JavaScript cookies (`document.cookie`) to a maximum lifetime of 7 days—and down to 24 hours if the URL contains marketing query parameters like `fbclid` or `gclid`. For high-consideration B2B products or enterprise sales with 30-to-90-day decision cycles, attribution breaks down completely. Here is how to configure true HTTP-set first-party cookies to preserve long-term attribution.

1. How Safari ITP Distinguishes Cookies

ITP distinguishes between cookies set via client-side JavaScript (`document.cookie = '...'`) and cookies set via server HTTP response headers (`Set-Cookie: ...; HttpOnly; Secure; SameSite=Lax`).

While JavaScript cookies are throttled to 1-7 days, HTTP response cookies issued by a server whose IP address belongs to the same DNS subnet as the website are granted their full configured lifespan (up to 400 days under current WebKit standards).

2. Setting Server-Side Client IDs via sGTM

In your Server-Side Google Tag Manager container, enable the 'Cookie Extender' or native server-side cookie writing feature for `_ga` and `_fbp` cookies.

When the incoming HTTP request hits `data.analyticsdev.com`, the server extracts the user identifier and attaches a `Set-Cookie` header in the response back to the browser.

set-cookie: _fbp=fb.1.1729440000.9482019482; Path=/; Domain=.analyticsdev.com; Max-Age=7776000; Secure; SameSite=Lax
cache-control: no-cache, no-store, must-revalidate

Implementation Checklist

Verify each milestone before deploying changes to live production ad accounts.

  • ✓First-party subdomain points to sGTM server IP address
  • ✓sGTM server client configured to write HTTP-only response cookies
  • ✓Safari developer tools inspection confirms cookie lifetime shows 1-2 years
  • ✓Cross-session return visits correctly attributed to original acquisition channel
